Google’s Take on Searches

15 Percent of Search Queries are still New

Regarding searches, the Googlers have referred to a statistic for many years stating that 15 percent of all the searches done are for the queries never before viewed by Google. In the new blog post of Google about search updates they reported that they still observe 15 percent of the search queries being new. On Google, there are trillions of searches each year and in fact, 15% of searches they observe every day are new ones. This indicates that there is always more work for them to do to present people with the ideal answers to their queries from numerous legitimate sources.

It makes a lot of sense when you take into account the number of searches being performed in the Non-English languages. It would be fascinating to know what the percentage is for the queries in English language and how the percentage differs based on the languages.

When you append voice queries into the mix, this certainly adds to that percentage as people tend to utilize more keywords when performing a voice search compared to when they perform a search by typing.

Search Ranking

In their latest quality enhancements for search, Google has stated that their algorithms are useful in determining the reliable sources from several billions of pages in their index. Nevertheless, it has become apparent that small group of queries in their day-to-day traffic has been returning clearly misleading or offensive content and this isn’t what people are looking for. In order to eliminate the spread of that kind of content for this subset of queries, they have enhanced their methods of evaluation and have made algorithmic updates to come up with more authoritative content.

New Guidelines for Search Quality Rating

To search, developing changes involves an experimentation process. They have evaluators who are real people who evaluate the quality of the search results of Google. These are useful in gathering data on their results’ quality and determine the areas where they need to improve. Google has updated its guidelines for search quality rating in order to offer more detailed examples of the lesser quality web pages for the raters to accurately flag, which includes unsupported conspiracy theories, unexpected offensive results, hoaxes and misleading information. These guidelines will help their algorithms in demoting such type of lesser quality content and help them in making additional enhancements over time.

Ranking Changes

Google combines numerous signals (in hundreds) to identify which results it shows for a given query from the content’s freshness to the number of times your search queries occur on the page. To demote the low-quality content and to help surface more authoritative pages, Google adjusted its signals so that the issues that are similar to Holocaust denial results that it observed back in December are less likely to occur.

Direct feedback tools

The aim of Google is to enhance the speed of your experience when you visit Google with features such as Autocomplete and Featured Snippets.

Autocomplete – Autocomplete helps you in predicting the searches you may type to rapidly reach the information you need.

Featured Snippets – Featured Snippets presents a highlight of the data pertinent to what you are searching for at the top of your search results.

In these features, the content that occurs is created algorithmically and is just a reflection of what people are looking for and what is available on the web. These brand new feedback mechanisms incorporate categories that are labeled clearly and so you can let Google know directly if you find any unhelpful or sensitive content. Google uses this feedback in enhancing its algorithms.

Greater Conspiracy about the Products of Google

Over the last several months, Google was questioned about why offensive or shocking predictions were occurring in Autocomplete. Taking this into account, it assessed where it can enhance its content policies and updated them accurately. At present, Google is publishing this policy to Help Center so that anyone can gain knowledge on Autocomplete and its approach to removals.

For the ones who are looking to dig a little deeper, Google’s How Search works site, provides more information to the website owners and users about the technology lying behind Search. The site incorporates an explanation about how the Google ranking systems sort through pages which are hundreds of billions in number to return your results and an overview of the Google’s user testing process as well.

Google also reports the “trillions of searches” statistic. Nevertheless, this is not entirely a new one. In a blog post on AdWords, Google also stated  that it does trillions of searches every year but this updated number has not been stated by the Google’s organic search side until now.
