How do you find the pitch of a hip roof?
In a hip roof with equal pitches, the unit run of a hip or valley rafter is 17 inches for every 12 inches of run in the main roof. For example, in an equal hip roof with an 8 / 12 pitch, the pitch of the hip rafter would be 8 / 17.
What is the standard pitch angle of a roof?
Conventional Pitch Roofs: Anything between 25 degrees and 47.5 degrees would be considered a conventional pitch truss. These are the easiest to construct and maintain. High Pitched Roofs: Over 47.5 degrees would be considered a high pitched roof. Higher pitched roofs often need specialist tiles and fitting methods.
What size should a hip rafter be?
The rule of thumb is that hips, purlins and ridge boards are at least 1.5 times the depth of the rafter.
How to calculate roof pitch and hip angle?
Using these angle definitions, I will derive formulas for the sheathing (?S) and hip pitch angle (?H) given the common pitch angle (which I call the roof pitch [?R ]) and plan angle (?P ). Figure 2: Illustration of Hip Roof Angles. Figure 3 shows my derivation.
What kind of roof is a hip roof?
Pyramid hip roof Hip roof Here we consider two types of hipped roofs (see picture): 1) Pyramid hip roof – roof base is a square, roof sides are identical isosceles triangles 2) Hip roof – roof base is a rectangle, two sides are identical isosceles triangles and two sides are identical trapeziums. Roof rise: Common rafters:
Is the base of a hip roof a square?

How are the sides of a hip roof measured?
Measure and cut rafters: the width and height of all four sides must be measured. A standard hip roof has a ridge, which is also called a board that forms the top of the roof. There are two sloping ridges angling out and down to the corners called hip rafters.
