Signs of the preactive phase of dying:
- increased restlessness, confusion, agitation, inability to stay content in one position and insisting on changing positions frequently (exhausting family and caregivers)
- withdrawal from active participation in social activities.
- increased periods of sleep, lethargy.
What is pre-active dying stage?
The pre-active phase of dying usually occurs two to three weeks prior to death. During this time, patients experience symptoms such as: Increased periods of sleep and lethargy. Withdrawal from social interaction. Restlessness, confusion, or agitation.
How long does the pre-active phase of dying typically last?
The pre-active stage of dying may last for around three weeks, but the active stage only lasts for around three days in general. Patients who are actively dying will usually show many of the symptoms that indicate death is approaching. They may be unresponsive, and their blood pressure typically drops significantly.
What is the surge before death called?
This difficult time may be complicated by a phenomenon known as the surge before death, or terminal lucidity, which can happen days, hours, or even minutes before a person’s passing. Often occurring abruptly, this period of increased energy and alertness may give families false hope that their loved ones will recover.
What happens to earlobes when dying?
Hands, feet and legs may feel cool or cold to the touch. Blood pressure gradually goes down and heart rate gets faster but weaker and eventually slows down. Fingers, earlobes, lips and nail beds may look bluish or light gray.
Why is a dying person so restless?
Organ failure: As organs such as the liver and kidney begin to fail, metabolic alterations and electrolyte problems affect brain function. Similarly, heart and lung failure, which commonly occur in the days before death, lead to decreased oxygen levels. All of these systemic effects exacerbate terminal restlessness.
Can a dying person hear you?
While the dying person may be unresponsive, there is growing evidence that even in this unconscious state, people are aware of what is going on around them and can hear conversations and words spoken to them, although it may feel to them like they are in a dream state.
