They prefer to grow in soil which is wet, but not completely waterlogged. During winter they require less water, and the soil should be kept just damp. The traditional compost mixture for Venus Flytraps is sphagnum peat moss mixed with either lime-free horticultural sand or perlite, to a ratio of about 2:1.
Do I need to feed my Venus flytrap indoors?
You do not need to fertilize your Venus’ fly trap; it prefers a lean diet. Do not feed your Venus’ fly trap meat! Live prey, such as such as flies, spiders, crickets, slugs and caterpillars, are a Venus’ fly trap’s favorite food.

Where to grow a Venus Flytrap in California?
I grow mine outdoors in sunny Southern California in mostly direct sunlight (the plants are shaded from direct afternoon sun by some taller, nearby pitcher plants). Outdoors or sunny windowsills should suffice.
