How does a safety interlock work?
When a program is in operation, power is applied to the solenoid in the interlock switch, which locks the key inside the switch and locks the door. When the program stops, power is removed, the solenoid is de-energized, and the key is unlocked, which allows the door to open.

As far as I can figure, when it senses the voltage in the coil at the kill wire (meaning the engine is running), it switches out the transistor that allows the current to pass to ground when the safety switches are activated. When that current in the kill wire is gone (engine is not running), it allows the safety switches to work.
