What is samba and how it works?
Samba is an extremely useful networking tool for anyone who has both Windows and Unix systems on his network. Running on a Unix system, it allows Windows to share files and printers on the Unix host, and it also allows Unix users to access resources shared by Windows systems.
How does Samba authentication done?
Samba becomes a member of a Windows domain and uses the domain’s primary domain controller (PDC) to perform authentication. Once authenticated, the user is given a special token that allows him or her access to any share with appropriate access rights.
What is SMB authentication?
SMB provides an authenticated intercommunication process mechanism to share the files or resources (files, folders, printers) within the server. SMB provides the clients to edit files, delete them, share the files, browse the network, print services, etc., over the network.
What is Samba security?
Samba Security Modes security = user: requires clients to supply a username and password to connect to shares. Samba user accounts are separate from system accounts, but the libpam-winbind package will sync system users and passwords with the Samba user database.
Who cursed Samba?
sage Durvasa
The Samba Purana consists of the narrative of Samba getting infected by leprosy, after being cursed by sage Durvasa for mocking him.
Is Samba secure?
Samba itself is secure in the fact that it encrypts passwords (can be set to use cleartext but that would be bad) but by default data is not encrypted. Samba can be compiled with SSL support, but you then have to find a client that supports SMB over SSL because Windows itself doesn’t.
Is Samba file sharing secure?
Whichever option you choose, your Samba server will only be as secure as the system you’re using to authenticate users. In this mechanism, a share is assigned a password rather than requiring an authenticated user with a username and password combination to be authorized to a share.
What services use SMB?
The Server Message Block Protocol (SMB protocol) is a client-server communication protocol used for sharing access to files, printers, serial ports and other resources on a network. It can also carry transaction protocols for interprocess communication.
Which is better SMB or NFS?
Conclusion. As you can see NFS offers a better performance and is unbeatable if the files are medium sized or small. If the files are large enough the timings of both methods get closer to each other. Linux and Mac OS owners should use NFS instead of SMB.
Is Samba still used?
Since 1992, Samba has provided secure, stable and fast file and print services for all clients using the SMB/CIFS protocol, such as all versions of DOS and Windows, OS/2, Linux and many others. Because of all that it offers, Samba has grown in popularity, and continues to do so, every year since its release in 1992.
