Why does my cactus smell so bad?
Whether or not your plant can be saved, depends on the extent of rot. For instance, as you’ve seen above, a foul smell emanating from your cactus is a sign that you’ve lost that plant. If the rot is starting off at the top of the stem, cut away small pieces of it (the stem) as you move down to the base of the plant.
Does cactus have smell?
Cactus flowers are so bright and colorful that you might expect them all to have sweet fragrances to match — but such is not the case. Some cactus flowers are sweet-smelling, however: night-blooming plants that are pollinated by moths. Most of the flowers are large and white — good targets for moths on dark nights.

Where to buy cactus in the Living Desert?
On a later trip to Austin and Spicewood and Bee Cave, where I buy most of my cactus, I bought another one, a stapelia grandiflora, which I saw blooming at The Living Desert in Spicewood, which used to be in Bee Cave (more about The Living Desert coming up in the next blog). Mine finally bloomed this year and pretty much outdid itself.
What kind of flower smells like dead animals?
Turned out the smell was coming from the orbea lutea, a succulent in the stapeliad family, which I had just bought, whose blooms decided to open during my trip home. Commonly known as the carrion flower, these flowers do smell like, well, dead animals.
