How do you paint faux shutters?
When painting plastic or vinyl, use a high quality, exterior, acrylic latex paint or a paint made specifically for plastic. While not required, priming the shutters with a latex primer before painting with acrylic latex paint can increase adhesion and allow better coverage by the top coat.
Can you paint interior vinyl shutters?
You sure can, though we generally don’t recommend it. Our shutters here are built for a specific look and painting them can do more harm than good. The reason this might even be in question is because you need to use very specific paints for vinyl surfaces.
Can indoor shutters be painted?
We DO NOT recommend using a brush to paint your shutters. There are very small gaps at the end of each louver and the shutter frame. Applying a latex or oil based house paint with a brush can fill these gaps. When the paint dries in-between these gaps, your shutter will no longer operate smoothly.
What is the best paint for vinyl shutters?
Latex paints
Latex paints work best with vinyl shutters. Oil paints won’t bond well to the shutter’s surface and easily peel or crack when the plastic shrinks or expands with the seasons. Spray paints are a great choice for vinyl too, as long as you use formulas like Krylon Fusion that are made to bond with plastic.
Can you paint wood shutters without taking them off?
Yes, you can paint wood shutters without taking them off of the house. But be warned: this may seem like an easy way to save time and effort, but it might take more work to do right than bringing the shutters down to paint.
What kind of paint to use on shutters?
It is important to use an oil-based paint if there is already oil paint on the wood shutters and acrylic paint for exactly the same reason. You will want a very glossy look to the shutters so don’t be afraid to be generous with your paint layer. You can always add more.
Is it OK to spray paint plantation shutters?
Well-painted plantation shutters give your home a smart appearance. As with any paint project, it’s important to thoroughly prepare every surface before applying the primer. However, the small gaps between the louvers, and narrowness of some of the shutter parts, lend themselves to spray painting rather than the use of brushes.
Do you need primer to repaint a shutter?
If you are repainting a shutter, you most likely won’t need primer. However, if the old paint was oil-based, you will need primer. If you are giving the shutter its first coat of paint, it is recommended you apply primer first.
