How do you disassemble a snowblower?
- Step 1 – Prepare the Snowblower. Unplug the spark plug to disable the motor, thereby ensuring you can’t lose a hand in the auger/impeller mechanism while working.
- Step 2 – Remove the Belt Covers. Start by removing the auger belt covers.
- Step 3 – Remove the Drive Pulley.
- Step 4 – Pull the Auger Out.
How do you know if a shear pin is broken on a snowblower?
When it’s safe, visually inspect the augers. If you don’t see the shear pin head or nut and you can manually spin the auger along the auger shaft, you broke a shear pin.
What is the impeller on a snowblower?
The engine of the snow blower is started either by a push button electric start, or a recoil start. A control lever/handle engages the auger which pulls snow into the auger housing, pushing it back towards the impeller (two stage). The spinning impeller, then shoots the snow out of the discharge chute.

I used a dremmel tool with a diamond cut off disk. ran it right up the center and then popped it out with a screwdriver. (This was on the shaft behind the impeller bearing which I had to hammer off with a pickle wrench) Mind you, my machine is a 1978 Craftsman and nobody had ventured into this unknown territory previously)
How do you remove an auger shaft on a snowblower?
In my old [1976] Bolens when the bearings on either end of the auger shaft are removed, you jiggle the whole deal a little, and the entire assembly comes out. In the newer ones, first you need to remove the pulleys & a woodruff key on the end of the impeller shaft. If you don’t have it, there should be a parts breakdown on the sears.com site.

Can a snowblower shaft be punched out with a drill?
Look closely at the ends also, it will appear the pin is split down one side. They will need to be punched out as they are very hard pins….or be prepared to go through several drill bits & even then its a risk of breaking a bit off inside the pin.
