Is it OK to cover a vent with furniture?
The short answer to this question is “No.” Vents are there to provide for a necessary free flow of air. Block that flow, and your home will run sub-optimally, and you could even cause damage to your HVAC system.
What can I safely cover a vent with?
Place the vent plate face-down on a flat surface and line the edges of the wood up with the edges of the section of grates. Then, tape the wood to the back of the vent plate using a strong tape, like duct tape. Tape all 4 sides of the piece of wood to the vent plate so it’s secure.
Can you put a couch in front of a return vent?
Keep couches, chairs and other large pieces of furniture at least 10 inches away from your cold air return vents. Avoid covering your cold air return vents with curtains, drapes or rugs. Clogged air filters can also cause cold air return blockages.
What happens if you block ventilation?
Blocking air return vents causes your system to work harder, as there is less air flow to move the air back to the furnace. This continued strain on the HVAC system can lead to a decrease in performance and more HVAC repairs down the road.
What happens if you block a return vent?
In the heating cycle, blocked cold air returns can cause the heat exchanger inside the blower compartment to store too much heat and eventually crack. If the cracks are too large, the furnace can emit carbon monoxide into your home’s air. Such a condition normally requires a complete system replacement.
Is it safe to put a bed over a heating vent?
It’s unlikely but not impossible that blocking a heating vent and causing the furnace apparatus to overheat could cause a fire. Put the furniture over the vent in summertime, and you decrease the overall air flow from a central air-conditioning system. Then, can you put bed over vent?
Is it okay to put furniture over vents?
Follow sensible and safe guidelines for furniture placement when you have to work around vents. Leave at least 18 inches between furniture and vents to promote free air flow.
Is it bad to block air vents in your home?
Can you put a sheet over an air vent?
OP, a sheet metal shop can bend you up a duct-like sheet metal box that can sit over the vent and send the air in any or all directions. It will be removable for vacuuming and you can spray paint it black or any other color. Just do it. If it is too cold/hot, then worry about it.
