Perler beads, also called Hama beads (in Japan) or melty beads, are small, plastic beads. You arrange them on a special pegboard to form a design. Then, using an iron and wax paper, you melt the beads together. When they cool off, you have a solid piece of plastic in your design.

What’s the best way to iron perler beads?
While your perler bead creation is on the peg board you want to carry it to your ironing board. Lay it down and place a sheet of parchment paper over it. Next take your hot iron and lightly press it onto the parchment paper covered perler beads. Don’t hold it too long. Pick it up, reposition, and lightly press again.
Do you need to iron both sides of Hama beads?
Pixel / Hama / Perler bead projects do not need to be ironed on both sides. I find that if you only iron one side (but do it well), then you get a nice front side that looks really cool – much better than melted plastic blobs on both sides of your pixel art project.
