8 Essential weaving tools every beginner should have to hand
- A loom. A loom provides you with the framework for your weave.
- Warp. Warp is the thread which run up and down your loom.
- Weft.
- Shuttles.
- A Comb.
- Tapestry Needle.
- Shed Stick (or a smooth-edged ruler, piece of card or dowel)
- Pair of Scissors.
Can you weave without a loom?
What’s great is that you don’t need to buy a loom or have a lot of fancy supplies – all you really need is a piece of cardboard and some yarn to start weaving. And of course you can never have enough yarn! A few tips: Make sure that the different colors of yarn you use are the same thickness as each other.

Of course you’ll need a loom to start weaving. If you already have a lap loom, then great! Make a loom out of cardboard – really easy and can be made from cardboard you already have around the house. I also have some great frame looms for beginner’s in my shop.

What kind of thread do you use on a loom?
There are a few different types of looms and my blog focuses on how to use a lap loom. The warp thread is the thread that is strung over the loom vertically, and holds the tension while you weave. This is the backbone of your weave.
Where do you place the dowel on a loom?
Position the dowel just above the point where the warp threads cross in the middle of the loom. Pull the dowel to the bottom of the loom, creating tension in the warp threads. The gap created between the front and back warp threads is called a natural shed. When weaving on a cardboard loom, you do not need to insert a dowel or create a shed.
