What is solid tine aeration?

Solid-Tine Aeration What is it? One of the simplest ways to refresh a lawn and combat compaction. You punch holes in the surface of the grass with solid metal spikes. These holes can be up to six inches deep. No soil is actually removed, so the holes naturally fill back up quickly.

What is hollow tining?

What is hollow tining? A hollow tine is a round tube that penetrates into the ground, collects a core and when the tube penetrates the ground again, the core is pushed out through a hole. This allows greenkeepers to remove material, such as poor quality soil and thatch and allows water and air into the root zone.

What aeration tines is used for soil exchange?

Aeration is an essential treatment for lawns for air exchange and water penetration. There are several methods of aeration, but the two main types we recommend for domestic lawns are Hollow Tine Aeration and Spiking, or Solid Tine Aeration.

Does aeration help thatch?

Aeration helps loosen the soil and helps decompose the excessive thatch layer at a faster rate. Both services accomplish a similar goal, but lawn aeration does so without the possibility of damaging your lawn in the way that dethatching would.

Can you aerate with garden forks?

When aerating with a garden fork or hand held aeration tool make sure you penetrate as deep as you can, at least 125 – 150mm for best results. Only do a small area at a time to avoid those hand blisters. Check the lawn condition before you aerate. Machines which only aerate a couple of inches deep are not so effective.

Why is hollow Tine aeration important for lawn care?

An essential Annual Treatment that we recommend as part of your lawn care programme is Hollow Tine Aeration. This is an important process that will allow more air and hydration into the soil by removing small plugs of earth from the surface of your lawn.

How big does a hollow Tine aerator need to be?

We have a mechanical hollow tine aerator that removes 2” deep and ½” wide plugs at approximately 45 plugs per square metre. This in total removes approx 5% of the surface soil. Hollow tine aeration focuses on the long term health of your lawn and therefore your lawn will look worse before it looks better.

When to use hollow tines or solid tines?

Overall, solid-tine aeration is more of a general maintenance aeration treatment used on well established lawns. If you have a bad compaction problem, then hollow-tine aeration is recommended instead.

Where can I dispose of hollow Tine aeration?

We can however, offer 10% off Scarification and Hollow Tine Aeration treatments, if you are able to dispose of the organic matter yourself. Either by putting it on your own compost pile or by taking it as garden waste to your local waste site. (We will of course bag up all organic waste first and will never just leave it on your lawn).
