In the corner of the cathedral is a corpse with the Notched Whip. If you have bought the Ashes of Arandiel DLC, there will be a man or a piece of a paint nearby the altar. Interact with them to start the DLC content.

Before heading up, look around the left for a small path leading below the Bonfire, where a corpse is guarded by an Exiled Knight. This enemy wields a large sword and a dagger in his left hand, and will also throw knives at you.
