Can you put Kerdi membrane over plywood?
The Kerdi system is installed using thin-set mortar. Since thin-set mortar works over almost any substrate, the Kerdi system can be used over drywall, plywood, or the various cement boards mentioned above.
Which Thinset for Kerdi on plywood?
Which Thinset for Kerdi? Unmodified thin-set mortar is recommended to set ceramic and stone tile, including large format tiles, over the KERDI membrane. Portland cement-based unmodified thin-set mortars are dependent on the presence of moisture for hydration in order to gain strength.
Can I use Schluter on plywood?
Schluter ®-DITRA and DITRA-XL are specifically designed for ceramic and stone tile installations. DITRA and DITRA-XL provide uncoupling to prevent cracked tile and grout. Made of polyethylene, DITRA and DITRA-XL serve as a waterproofing layer that protects moisture-sensitive substrates, such as plywood/OSB.
Does Thinset work on plywood?
Use Thinset With a Higher Latex Content Thinset is the wet base that you first trowel on the plywood to make the tile stick. Higher latex content is essential for bonding to plywood. A quality unmodified thinset should be used and mixed with a latex additive.
Can you tile over Kerdi membrane?
Since KERDI is impervious, it does not deprive the mortar of its moisture. This allows the cement to properly hydrate, resulting in a strong, dense bond coat. In general, modified thin-set mortar is not recommended to set ceramic and stone tile, including large format tiles, over the KERDI membrane.
Can I put Kerdi board over drywall?
Yes. Once you install KERDI over the drywall panels, they will be completely protected from the water and vapor in your tiled shower.
Can I use unmodified thinset on plywood?
Do I need an uncoupling membrane on plywood?
Although some substrates absolutely require uncoupling membranes, they can be installed on a range of surfaces, including cement mortar, backerboard, OSB, and plywood. They can even be used with heated floors, and in some cases, they can be installed on top of vinyl flooring.
Can you tile directly onto plywood?
While you can lay tile directly over a concrete slab using thin-set adhesive, don’t make the mistake of applying tile directly to a plywood subfloor. No matter how firm the subfloor; the plywood will expand and contract at a different rate as the tile, causing cracks to develop in the grout lines or tiles over time.
Can a Kerdi be put on drywall?
First Kerdi can be installed on drywall or cement board. However if installed on drywall it is only protecting one side. The back side of the drywall fails and it is just as bad or worse than if it had an issue on the tile side. All shower/tub areas should have concrete board (I prefer hardiboard).
How long does a Kerdi board have to dry?
The KERDI-BOARD will protect the ceiling from both water and vapor penetration. How long does Kerdi have to dry?
Is it better to use Kerdi or Redguard?
No, it won’t interfere with the performance or adversely effect it. RedGuard is not harder to adhere to. There is no reason to use both products although it can be easier to use the RedGuard in corners and niches without the build up you can get with kerdi.
When to use Kerdi band after mortar installation?
Wait 24 hours after the membrane (i.e., Schluter®-KERDI-BAND and Schluter®-KERDI) installation is complete to allow for the final set of the mortar and to ensure waterproof performance of the assembly at seams and connections before water testing. Is Kerdi band necessary?
