How are interior shutters measured?
Measure the exact outside height of your window frame from the top to bottom, and write it down. This measurement will be your shutter frame drop. If you have a window sill, you’ll only measure from the top of your frame down to the flat surface of the sill.
How much depth do you need for plantation shutters?
Minimum depth for inside mounts is 2 ½” from glass to the outer edge of the window frame. Shutters with a 3 ½” louver require a minimum depth of 3”. For best results, inside mounting is recommended for shades that will be installed on window frames with at least a 2 ½” minimum depth.
What is the difference between plantation shutters and traditional shutters?
Plantation shutters have wider louvers, ranging in width from 1 7/8 to 5 ½ inches. The louvers are either flat or elliptical in shape. Elliptical louvers are stronger than flat louvers and resist sagging. Traditional shutters have narrow wedge-shaped louvers that are only 1¼ inches wide.
How do you measure and install shutters?
Always measure the opening at the point of the window where the shutter frame will be installed. Record the narrowest width of the three. Measure the height of your window at the three positions indicated in illustration B: left, middle and right. Record the shortest height of the three.

Should shutters go on all Windows?
Contrary to popular belief, not every window needs shutters. Proper shutters should at least appear large enough to cover the entirety of the window when shut (as that’s, you know, the whole point of shutters). Shutters should be avoided on double-mulled windows, picture windows, bay windows, and most dormer windows.
