How can you prevent a compost fire?
Preventing Compost Fires
- Keep compost piles small. Pile height should not exceed 12 feet.
- Monitor moisture content and internal temperature. Smoke, venting, or burning smells are noticeable signs of heat retention and hotspots.
- Have emergency plans in place. Invite your local fire department to do a pre-incident survey.
Is compost a form of combustion?
Spontaneous combustion in compost has been covered in BioCycle (see “Fires at Composting Facilities: Causes and Conditions,” January 2000). If enough oxygen is suddenly supplied by the aeration system or by opening up the pile, temperatures will increase immediately and dramatically to create a flaming fire.
Why does compost spontaneously combust?
Spontaneous combustion occurs when more heat is generated in the pile by decomposition than is lost to the surrounding environment, heating to a temperature high enough to cause ignition. Composting materials typically ignite at a temperature between 150° and 200° Celsius.
Can compost be dangerous?
Compost can be a breeding ground for dangerous pathogens, some of which have killed or seriously harmed unsuspecting gardeners. Inspectors should familiarize themselves with these illnesses, some of which can be contracted in other parts of the house.

Is it possible for a compost pile to catch on fire?
So can a compost pile catch on fire? In the right conditions, a pile consisting of organic matter can catch on fire, most commonly due to spontaneous combustion. It is more common for this to happen for large commercial compost piles. It is rare for a small compost pile used by a home gardener to ever catch on fire.
Is it dangerous for compost to get too hot?
Overheated compost piles pose no fire danger if they are properly moist but some of the organic properties will be compromised. Excessive temperatures in compost can cause a spontaneous combustion, but this is very rare even among over-heated compost piles. Properly aerated and moist compost piles, no matter how hot, are not dangerous.
Can you turn a compost pile into an open container?
Turning compost will automatically improve the oxygen in a pile because it prevents the material from getting matted down. You can also create your pile in an open container such as wire mesh, chicken wire, or pallets. Below is a picture of my double bin compost pile created from free pallets.
What should the temperature of a compost pile be?
