- The traditional height for fitting the thumb latch is about 1300mm from floor.
- Drill a row vertically of 6mm holes one above the other, then with the use of a chisel, complete the holes to make a narrow slot for the thumb bar to go through the door, about 90mm back from the shutting edge.
How does a thumb latch work?
Thumb latches are two-way latches and work as follows: on the outside (street-side) of the gate is a decorative plate with a thumb depressor. When you depress the thumb, a latch-arm on the inside of the gate lifts and allows the gate to be opened.
What is a thumb latch lock?
The Thumb Latch features a reversible design for use of left- or right-hand doors up to 1 ½” thick. Note: Generally used on an in-swing door so that the thumb bar is on the outside and the lock is on the inside. Out-swing doors are not very common in residential construction but often used for closets.

A 3mm HSS drill bit is ideal for the pilot holes you will need for fitting the back plate to the latch plus the keep, latch staple and latch hinge. We suggest a 5m tape measure which will stand you in good stead for many other jobs too.

Fitting the Latch Front on the Back Plate. Insert the handle and lever of the latch so that the lever sits on the bottom of the hole and is level through the section of the gate as yu can see in the picture. It is really important that the lever lays on the bottom of the hole.
How do you fix a lock on a gate?
First look at the back of the gate and make sure you have a cross timber through which you can fix the latch. This can be seen in the picture below, left. If the cross bar is not at the right height (this is purely a matter of personal preference) a lock block can be added easily by simply fixing an additional piece of timber to the gate.
