Are weevils harmful to plants?
Outdoors, weevils can kill garden plants. Indoors, the pests are more of a nuisance than a danger. Weevils contaminate infested food with their feces and cast skins, causing more damage than they eat. So, an infestation may render entire packages or pantries of food inedible.
Where do garden weevils come from?
The Vine Weevil is native to Northern Europe but was seen in North America as early as 1835 so it has now spread around many parts of the world. It has a few weaknesses in its lifecycle (see below) and the recent popularity of growing plants in pots has enabled it to flourish.
What do garden weevils look like?
Adult weevils are approximately 9mm (about 5/16in) long and dull black with dirty yellow mark on the wing cases. They cause irregular-shaped notches of leaf margins during the summer. The plump c-shaped white legless grubs have light brown heads and are up to 10mm (about 3/8in) long.
