If you want to preserve the honey/brown color of your teak outdoor furniture, a sealer is recommended. Teak sealers are usually solvent-based and of water-like viscosity, containing protection against mold, ultraviolet light and moisture. A variety of shades are available if you want a color other than the natural one.

You should never oil sealed teak—it’s unnecessary since the sealant will already preserve the wood’s color. Applying teak oil could also reverse the sealant’s effect and promote the growth of fungus and mildew.

Allow your furniture to sit outside for at least two weeks. During this period, UV light from the sun will open up the grains in your teak furniture so that they can better accept the sealant. Be sure to remove any debris or dust from the furniture before spraying the sealant lightly and rubbing with a clean cloth.
Is it safe to use teak oil on furniture?
Most teak furniture manufacturers recommend not using teak oil. The wood’s natural oil is sufficient to protect it from damage. Teak oil is not actually the same as the natural oil found in the teak tree. It is just called “teak oil” for marketing purposes, when really it is mostly composed of linseed oil and solvents.

For dry, arid climates, we recommend occasionally wetting your teak with water to help retain some moisture. Teak will never completely dry out in desert environments, since it has so many natural oils, but you can reduce the appearance of end-grain checking with an occasional application of water.
