  1. the area around it is swollen, painful, hot, very red or dark (depending on your skin colour)
  2. there’s blood or pus coming out of it – pus can be white, green or yellow.
  3. you feel hot or shivery or generally unwell.

Treating the infection at home

  1. Wash your hands before touching or cleaning your piercing.

The only time you should touch it is during cleansing. It’s may also be tempting to take the jewelry out, but this can actually do more harm than good. Not only can it cause further irritation, removing the jewelry may allow a newer piercing to close.

How do you heal an infected lip piercing?

With a pre-made saline solution

  1. Soak a cloth or a sturdy paper towel with saline.
  2. Gently wipe the cloth or towel around each side of the jewelry.
  3. Make sure you clean the outside and inside of your lip or cheek.
  4. Repeat this process as many times as needed.
  5. Don’t scrub or prod, as this will cause irritation.
