Is it possible to alter a dress up one size?

What do you do if your dress is too big? Taking a gown one to two sizes down is pretty common, and should still keep the integrity of the original design fairly easily. But if you have fallen in love with a sample gown multiple sizes too large, a talented tailor can often work wonders to reshape the dress.

Can you let out a dress?

The dress will have to have been sewn with extra material at the seams so it’s possible to let it out. Wedding dresses, formal gowns, and nicer dresses will have the extra material at the seams but if you have a casual dress that you picked up at the department store, you might be out of luck.

Can a seamstress let out a dress?

Can these dresses be altered? Each dress includes some additional fabric in the side and zipper seams so that the dresses can be let out. A seamstress can generally let out an extra 0.25 inches from each of the two side seams and the two zipper seams, but not every seamstress will make adjustments to the zipper.

Is it easier to take in or let out a dress?

It’s easier to take a larger dress in than to let a smaller one out. Instead, consider a gown with structure. In general, the slinkier the gown, the harder it is to fix the fit if you gain or lose weight.

Do you have to let out a dress to make it bigger?

Some wedding gowns or cocktail dresses will intentionally have a lot of seam allowance to allow for letting out. If your dress only has a 1/4″ or less seam allowance, then there probably isn’t enough to let out the dress. Once you have determined whether or not you can make your dress larger, move on to measuring your new seam.

I have been told by a few different alterations people that if your dress has a side seem, the general rule of thumb is that they can let your dress out up to 2 inches per seam. You should be able to look on the inside of your dress and see if there is material there, or take it to an alterations person before you let yourself get too nervous!

What happens when you let out a dress?

With the first, there will be extra fabric at the side seam that will be folded along the seam. If you were to remove the stitches, the extra fabric would unfold. The dress I’m letting out has an enclosed seam, with two lines of stitching.

How big of a seam do I need for a dress?

Most seam allowances are 5/8″ to 1″. It depends on the designer – generally the more expensive dresses have more seam allowance. If you have a gown with side seams that are 1″ you could safely make it a 1/2″ seam.
