What is the best time to buy roses?
Depending on the time of year you purchase your roses, you will have a choice of types of roses:
- Bare-root roses: These are only available from about November to March usually mail order.
- Containerised roses: These are at their best in garden centres from about November to March.

Standard roses have a single tall stem, topped with foliage and flowers, like a small tree. They are usually a modern rose or miniature rose grafted onto a strong, bare stem. Grafting a climbing or rambling rose in the same way creates a cascading form known as a weeping standard.

Standard Roses – also referred to as Stem Roses, are a variation of the normal bush rose grafted at a height of 90cm or 60cm (Patio Standards). They can create a formal appearance if planted in a row or as a feature in garden beds. They can also be grown in large tubs on the veranda.

Roses are best planted in the spring (after the last frost) or in fall (at least six weeks before your average first frost). Planting early enough in fall gives the roots enough time to get established before the plants go dormant over the winter.
What to look for when buying roses?
Look for healthy, robust leaves that are free of disease and insects. The rose bush should have good shape and be properly pruned. If the plant has weak stems or if the branches are falling over, select a different plant. Plants should have adequate moisture and not appear dry.

Do you need to buy rose bushes locally?
You do not need to purchase roses locally. You can order your rose bushes online very easily these days. The miniature and mini-flora roses are shipped to you in little pots ready to take out and plant.
Which is the best type of rose to buy?
Short to medium growing cultivars are the best while taller cultivars and those with an upright habit are best avoided. Floribunda type roses often seem to the best as a standard as they are generally fit the above criteria and are quite free flowering as well.
