There is no difference. The 1224b is from bulk packaging.

To remove the cartridge from your faucet assembly, first hold the handles steady and unscrew the handle hub counterclockwise. Once the handle hub is loosened completely, pull the handle off the valve assembly. Then, loosen and remove the nut from the cartridge using pliers.
Are Moen 1224 and 1224b cartridges interchangeable?
Answer: The 1224 is packaged in retail packaging sold at retail stores. The 1224b is not in pretty retail packaging but just the cartridge only in a bag. All double handle faucets from Moen use the same cartridge.

Discard the old cartridge and insert the new cartridge into the valve assembly. Make certain that the notches line up as indicated. Reattach the nuts to the valve assemblies and tighten them with pliers. Replace the handles and secure them with the screws.
