What kind of coolant do you put in a diesel?
For diesel trucks using green antifreeze, the recommendation of coolant service is usually around two years or 30,000 miles. For diesel engines running extended-life coolant, service is around five years or 100,000 miles. To be on the safe side, periodically check the antifreeze every six months.
Do diesel trucks take different coolant?
There is no antifreeze that is specifically for petrol/gas engines and Diesel engines. The type of antifreeze that is suitable for a given vehicle mainly depends upon the age of the vehicle and therefore whether it can contain organic corrosion inhibitors. Orange is normally for newer engines and green for older.
Is coolant different for diesel and petrol?
There is just engine coolant. There are no separate petrol / diesel engine coolants. The same coolant does duty in either engine!
Can I use diesel coolant in a gasoline engine?
Some diesel engine coolants are made for “mixed fleets” (so that you don’t have to stock one kind of coolant for the four thousand Kenworths you own, and another for the fifty Chevrolet pickups and cars you use to support the KWs) and if that’s the coolant you have, it’ll work fine.
What happens if you use the wrong color antifreeze?
Mixing different engine coolants or using the wrong coolant can impair the performance of the special additive packages; this can result in increased corrosion to the radiator. Using the wrong engine coolant can gradually lead to corrosion and damage to the water pump, radiator, radiator hoses and cylinder gasket.
Can you use 50/50 antifreeze in a diesel?
A 50/50 mix of heavy-duty antifreeze/coolant and clean, quality (distilled, de-mineralized, or de-ionized) water with supplemental coolant additives (SCA’s) is required for all heavy-duty engines. A blown head gasket won’t pass diesel into coolant system.
Do diesel engines require special coolant?
Do you need special coolant for diesel engines? Diesel engines are subject to “cavitation erosion” of the cylinder walls if proper additives are not presant in the coolant. This erosion can eat holes clear through the cylinder walls. Use a “precharged” coolant formulated for diesel engines, usually not green.
What happens if you put diesel coolant in a gas car?
Since diesel fuel is thicker and denser than gasoline, the fuel pump will struggle to move the diesel/gasoline mixture through the system. Instead, it will clog up the fuel filter. And whatever amount of diesel that then makes its way to the engine will clog the fuel injectors, making them inoperable.
What kind of coolant does a diesel engine need?
The diesel engines today emit more heat than their predecessors, requiring better cooling mechanisms than ever before. They require a fully formulated, premixed, glycol based coolant containing a heavy duty additive package and de-ionized water. The coolants play an integral role in the system maintenance.
What’s the difference between engine coolant and antifreeze?
Difference between engine coolant and antifreeze. Coolant is the liquid that circulates around the engine and antifreeze is usually a concentrate of glycol that requires dilution before becoming the coolant. Antifreeze can however be purchased already as a diluted mixture of 50% antifreeze and 50% distilled water.
What happens if an engine is used without coolant?
If an engine is used without coolant (antifreeze), it can suffer extended damage especially during winter. In the summer time, cooling can be obtained using plain water in an emergency situation although not recommended much beyond this since it’s much easier to boil over as well.
Can you use antifreeze on a diesel engine?
Antifreeze has also undergone changes and seems to be a hot topic. The frightening fact is that many diesel engine owners are unaware of these changes, which could result in a major catastrophe down the road. Hopefully, this information will benefit you and your diesel engine customers. For years, we used the typical, green antifreeze formulation.
