What kind of things can you tie-dye?
As you already know, the most popular things to tie dye are, of course, cotton t shirts but that’s only the beginning! You can tie dye all wearables from socks and hats to long johns and even denim jackets. Just make sure to match the dye to the fabric.
What should you not tie-dye?
Do not place“opposite” colors next to each other, such as red near green, blue near orange, or yellow near purple: the results would be a brown, muddy mess. If you really like bright colors avoid placing a color with red mixed in it, such as purple, near green.

What can I use at home to tie dye?
Mix two cups of white vinegar to two cups of warm water and soak your clothing or fabric in the mixture for one hour. While the clothes soak, mix eight drops of your food colouring with 120ml warm water. Use this dye mixture to create any of the patterns listed above.
What can I do with leftover tie dye?
Place project in a plastic bag and leave overnight. Grab your tie dye project and put it into your plastic Ziploc bag and let it sit overnight. Many tie dye tutorials recommend allowing your project to sit 6 to 8 hours.
Should tie-dye be wet or dry?
We generally recommend washing your fabric and leaving it damp before tie-dyeing, as the dye has an easier time saturating the fabric when it’s wet. But depending on the technique and the look you want, you can apply dye to dry fabric. Just make sure the fabric has been washed (if it’s new) to remove the sizing.
What can you use instead of rubber bands for tie dye?
Kite string is the most common alternative to rubber bands for tie-dye. This type of string is cheap and can be bought at most craft stores. Just about any kind of string can work, but kite string in particular is both cheap and strong. Another, more advanced option is to use waxed thread.
