OSHA’s adoption of GHS via HazCom 2012, on the other hand, mandates the use of a single GHS format for safety data sheets, a format which features 16 sections in a strict ordering. Another change, thanks to GHS, is the renaming of material safety data sheets from MSDSs to simply safety data sheets, or SDSs.

MSDS is Material Safety Data Sheets, whereas SDS just Safety Data Sheets. SDS is similar to MSDS, the difference is that it is presented in a standardized, user-friendly, 16 section format. The other difference is that SDS adheres to the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS).
When did the material data safety sheet ( MSDS ) start?
In order to do this, I have rearranged its format as it developed over time. The earliest mention of some of the requirements covered in the MSDS goes back into the dawn of time when information was exchanged verbally on the materials used as medicines and for dyes.
