Why do we use normal saline with blood transfusion?
Saline can be used to increase blood volume when a blood transfusion is not possible.
What fluid do you run blood with?
Normal saline is compatible with blood; ringer’s lactate, dextrose, hyperalimentation and other intravenous solutions with incompatible medications are not compatible with blood and blood products.
Do you have to prime blood tubing with saline?
Immediately prior to administration, two licensed personnel must verify the correct blood product and patient. Blood products require a dedicated line for infusion, and filtered intravenous tubing. Only normal saline should be used to prime the intravenous line, with no other solutions or medications used.
How does saline affect blood?
When a person receives fluids intravenously (through an IV bag, for example), a saline solution is sometime used. Giving large amounts of pure water directly into a vein would cause your blood cells to become hypotonic, possibly leading to death.
What are the disadvantages of normal saline?

- Saline is more likely to cause metabolic acidosis.
- Saline is more likely to cause interstitial lung edema.
- Saline is more likely to cause renal blood flow disturbances.
- Saline is more likely to cause severe hypotension in renal transplant patients.
Why normal saline is bad?
“Normal” saline is a hypertonic, acidotic fluid. There is no physiologic rationale for its use as a resuscitative fluid. There are many potential problems related to saline. These include causing hyperchloremic acidosis, hyperkalemia, hemodynamic instability, renal malperfusion, systemic inflammation, and hypotension.
What to do if IV is not dripping?
If fluid is not dripping: Check that all clamps are open. Make sure the medicine bag is higher than your IV line. If the fluid still won’t drip, call ______________________________.
How do you spike blood tubing?
Spike the bag of 0.9% normal saline with one of the Y-tubing spikes. Hang the bag on the IV pole, and prime the tubing. Open the upper clamp on the normal saline side of the tubing, and squeeze the drip chamber until fluid covers the filter and fills one-third to one-half of the drip chamber.

Can you mix isotonic saline with red blood cells?
INTRAVENOUS SOLUTIONS Of the various intravenous solutions, only isotonic saline (0.9%) is recommended for use with blood components. Other commonly used intravenous solutions will cause varying degrees of difficulty when mixed with red cells. For example, 5% dextrose in water will hemolyze red cells.
