What can medical assistants do and Cannot do?
The sites warns that medical assistants cannot:
- Independently perform telephone triage (medical assistants are not legally authorized to interpret data or diagnose symptoms!).
- Independently diagnose or treat patients.
- Independently prescribe medications.
- Independently give out medication samples.
Are standing medical orders legal?
The nurse is not ordering the medication; the physician is. The nurse is acting as the physician’s stand-in when calling in the prescription that the physician has written, because the physician has delegated that function to the nurse. Note that standing orders are not legal in all states.
What is medical standing orders?
Standing orders are written protocols that authorize designated members of the health care team (e.g., nurses or medical assistants) to complete certain clinical tasks without having to first obtain a physician order. This can improve efficiency by freeing physicians to focus on more complex care.
Can medical assistant pass meds?
Medical assistants are allowed to give out medications if they have been authorized by the supervising physician.
Do standing orders expire?
If you set an end date, the standing order will stay active until that date, or until you cancel it manually via your bank (which you can do at any time).
Can a CMA start an IV?
Answer: A certified medical assistant (CMA) can receive the training necessary to administer IV therapy, but can not be IV certified. IV certification requires taking and passing a national exam which is not available to unlicensed medical personnel, but actual certification is not needed for most IV work.

Yes, Medical Assistants can work in Hospitals and they can be found working in a number of capacities and in multiple sectors. Medical Assistants can work in Public, Private and Military Hospitals. They may work in primary care, emergency care, as an administrator, or even in medical coding and billing.
